Study confirms increased heart attack deaths in NYC ambulance diversions
(Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Ambulance diversions from nearby, crowded New York emergency rooms to more distant emergency departments are associated with increased deaths among patients suffering from heart attacks, according to a paper presented at a meeting of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

| • | Isolation and Some Properties of New Xylanase from the Intestine of a Herbivorous Insect (Samia Cynthia Pryeri) |
| Xylan the major portion of the hemicellulose of plant cell walls are heterogeneous polysaccharides. Xylanases are enzymes obtained from different species of microorganisms that degrade the xylosidic linkages of xylans backbone producing xylose with other monoresidues. In this study, xylanase producing strains were isolated from intestine of a herbivorous insect at Rajshahi University Campus. The strains were isolated on xylan agar media and screened by -xylanolysis method. Zymogram analysis was confirmed the xylanolytic activity. The strains was identified to be Aeromonas sp. and xylanase enzyme was detected in the culture supernatant of the strain. Xylanase enzyme was purified from culture supernatant of Aeromonas sp. by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 followed by ion exchange chromotography on DEAE-cellulose. In DEAE cellulose column chromatography, three protein peaks F-1a, F-1b and F-1c were appeared. Among these peaks, only F-1b showed xylanase activity and the degree of purification attained 64.54 fold. The purified enzyme gave single band on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicating its homogeneity. The enzyme gave maximum activity against xylan as substrate at pH 7.0 and temperature at 55C. The Km value of xylanase was found to be 0.91% using the oat spelt xylan as substrate. The xylanase hydrolyzed strongly oat spelt xylan and birch wood xylan but didnot hydrolyze cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and starch. Xylose was detected as the hydrolysis products of oat spelt xylan by the xylanase. | |

| • | The hyperbolic effect of density and strength of inter beta-cell coupling on islet bursting: a theoretical investigation |
| Background: Insulin, the principal regulating hormone of blood glucose, is released through the bursting of the pancreatic islets. Increasing evidence indicates the importance of islet morphostructure in its function, and the need of a quantitative investigation. Recently we have studied this problem from the perspective of islet bursting of insulin, utilizing a new 3D hexagonal closest packing (HCP) model of islet structure that we have developed. Quantitative non-linear dependence of islet function on its structure was found. In this study, we further investigate two key structural measures: the number of neighboring cells that each ?-cell is coupled to, nc, and the coupling strength, gc. Results: ?-cell clusters of different sizes with number of ?-cells n? ranging from 1?343, nc from 0?12, and gc from 0?1000 pS, were simulated. Three functional measures of islet bursting characteristics ? fraction of bursting ?-cells fb, synchronization index ?, and bursting period Tb, were quantified. The results revealed a hyperbolic dependence on the combined effect of nc and gc. From this we propose to define a dimensionless cluster coupling index or CCI, as a composite measure for islet morphostructural integrity. We show that the robustness of islet oscillatory bursting depends on CCI, with all three functional measures fb, ? and Tb increasing monotonically with CCI when it is small, and plateau around CCI = 1. Conclusion: CCI is a good islet function predictor. It has the potential of linking islet structure and function, and providing insight to identify therapeutic targets for the preservation and restoration of islet ?-cell mass and function. | |
